Tengu

Project Statement

My journey through the Japanese landscape unveils a narrative shaped by centuries of human presence. In the serene remoteness of rural areas, traces of humanity persist, subtly yet unmistakably. Whether it’s the weathered stone pathways traversed by generations, the meticulously tended terraced fields echoing ancient agricultural practices, or the humble wooden homes nestled amidst towering mountains, each element tells a tale of harmonious coexistence with nature.

The country’s declining population casts a poignant shadow over these landscapes. Amidst the solitude of abandoned homes and forgotten places, there remains a continued reverence for heritage and tradition. It’s a testament to resilience—a profound reminder of the enduring spirit that sustains these places through time.

Tengu, the guardians of mountains and forests, symbolize the spiritual connection between humans and nature in Japanese culture. Their legendary presence infuses the landscape with a sense of mystery and reverence, reminding us of the enduring folklore that has shaped Japan’s cultural identity through its history and continues to influence it today.

As a foreigner, the landscapes surrounding the mountains of Kyoto evoke a profound sense of both alienation and familiarity. This duality invites viewers to immerse themselves in the layered history and ever-evolving landscape of Japan. “Tengu” captures this intricate tapestry, honoring the timeless connection between people, place, and mythology.
