Kodama
Project Statement
Kodama 木霊—meaning “tree echo” in Japanese—evokes both the presence of forest spirits and the lingering memory of those who once lived in these places. This project is shaped by the idea of echoes—human and spiritual—held within the land. It explores the quiet traces of habitation that remain across Japan’s rural landscapes, where the boundary between past and present, absence and presence, often feels porous.
These landscapes hold quiet evidence of a long human history. In the remoteness of the mountains surrounding Kyoto—and in rural regions across Japan—signs of life persist in subtle ways. Weathered stone paths, attempts to maintain terraced fields, and wooden homes softened by time all speak to a deep history of coexistence between people and nature.
Japan’s declining population casts a shadow over these spaces. Some areas appear forgotten, yet carry signs of care—gardens tended, roofs patched, paths swept. These details suggest not just survival, but reverence. The presence of kodama—spirits said to inhabit ancient trees—feels inseparable from these places. Unseen yet felt, they embody the spiritual ecology of the land, blurring the divide between the natural and the human.
As a foreigner living in Japan, this landscape feels both alien and familiar. An attempt to carry forward the enduring human spirit—to honor those who came before, the spirits that linger, and the places that continue to hold their echoes.

プロジェクト声明
木霊（こだま）――日本語で「木の反響」を意味するこの言葉は、森に宿る精霊の存在と、かつてこの地に生きた人々の記憶の残響を呼び起こします。本作は、大地に刻まれた人間的・霊的な「こだま（響き）」という概念に形づくられています。日本の農村風景に今も残る静かな人の痕跡をたどりながら、過去と現在、不在と存在の境界が曖昧に感じられる空間を探求しています。
これらの風景には、長い人類の歴史の静かな証が宿っています。京都の山間部、そして日本各地の農村地域では、目立たないながらも確かな生活の痕跡が今も息づいています。風雨にさらされた石畳の小道、維持しようとする棚田、時の流れにやわらかくされた木造の家々が、人と自然の深い共生の歴史を語りかけてきます。
日本の人口減少は、こうした風景に静かな影を落としています。一見忘れ去られたように見える場所にも、手入れされた庭、修繕された屋根、掃き清められた小道など、今も誰かの気配が感じられます。それは単なる維持ではなく、土地や過去への敬意を示しているように思われます。古木に宿るとされる精霊――木霊の存在は、こうした場所と切り離せないもののように感じられます。目には見えずとも確かに存在し、この地の霊的な生態系を体現しながら、自然と人間の境界を溶かしています。
日本に暮らす異国の者として、この風景には異質さと親しみが同時に感じられます。永く続いてきた人間の精神を受け継ごうとするささやかな試み——かつてこの地に生きた人々、今もなお漂う精霊の気配、そしてその記憶を静かに抱え続ける風景に敬意を込めて。
