Project Statement
How little information is needed before both humans and machines begin to guess?
This work began in 2018, before artificial intelligence became a cultural shorthand for conversations about perception, authorship, and vision. While the technology has evolved, the central question has remained unchanged: how do we construct meaning from incomplete information?
As visual information is reduced, certainty gives way to inference. Neither human perception nor machine vision relies on complete information. Both attempt to complete what is only partially visible, constructing meaning from what remains.
The machine does so through probability and statistical models. We do so through memory, context, expectation, lived experience, and intuition. Neither observer possesses complete certainty.
Both construct meaning from absence as much as presence.

人間と機械は、どれほど情報が失われたとき「推測」を始めるのだろうか。
本作は、人工知能が「知覚」「作者性」「視覚」をめぐる文化的な議論の中心となる以前の2018年に始まりました。技術は大きく進化しましたが、この作品が問い続けてきた本質は変わっていません。それは、不完全な情報から私たちはどのように意味を構築しているのか、という問いです。
視覚情報が失われていくにつれ、確信は推論へと置き換わります。人間の知覚も機械の視覚も、完全な情報に依存しているわけではありません。どちらも部分的にしか見えないものを補い、残された情報から意味を組み立てようとします。
機械は確率や統計モデルによってそれを行います。私たちは記憶、文脈、予測、経験、そして直感によってそれを行います。どちらの観察者も完全な確信を持つことはありません。両者は「存在するもの」だけでなく、「欠けているもの」からも意味を見出しているのです。
