Project Statement
This series of charcoal portraits is an exploration of memory, identity, and disconnection. The figures are based on my own friends and family—those closest to me. Each hovers on the edge of being seen: faces dissolved, features eclipsed, identities receding into shadow.
These are not portraits of individuals, but remnants—composite figures imagined from fragments of memory and emotional residue. The process is deliberately layered: technology fills in the gaps and expands what is possible; the hand reclaims what is human.
Once tethered to real people, the faces have been abstracted through a technological lens using machine learning, then reconstituted in shadow. Drawing them as the final artifact is an attempt to retrieve something human—but what emerges is fragmentary and obscured. This reflects a broader condition: shaped by systems too vast to fully comprehend, we are rarely given the chance to truly know ourselves. Instead, we wear masks—sometimes willingly, sometimes unconsciously—as identity becomes something curated, performed, and often lost in the noise.
These works are not about likeness. They speak to absence—to the silence between people, the fracture between presence and perception. Personal, yet anonymous. Seen, yet unknowable.

この木炭によるポートレート・シリーズは、記憶、アイデンティティ、そして断絶をめぐる探求です。描かれているのは、私自身の友人や家族——最も身近な存在たちをもとにしています。それぞれの姿は、「見える」ことの境界に揺らぎながら、顔は溶け、輪郭は曖昧になり、存在は影の中へと後退していきます。
個人の肖像ではありません。これは残響であり、記憶や感情の断片から想像された複合的な存在です。制作のプロセスには意図的な層があり、テクノロジーによって欠けた部分が補完され、可能性が拡張される一方で、最後に人間の手が「人間らしさ」を取り戻します。
これらの顔は、かつて実在の人々と結びついていましたが、機械学習による技術のレンズを通して抽象化され、影として再構成されています。最終的にそれを描く行為は、人間的な何かを取り戻そうとする試みですが、そこに現れるのは常に断片的で曖昧な存在です。それは、私たちが生きる現代の状況そのものでもあります。あまりにも巨大なシステムの中で、自分自身を深く知る機会はほとんどなく、私たちは仮面をかぶって生きています——それは意図的なものでもあれば、無意識的なものでもあります。アイデンティティは演出され、選ばれ、やがて雑音の中に失われていくのです。
この作品は、似せることを目的とした肖像ではありません。描かれているのは「不在」です。人と人とのあいだに漂う沈黙、存在と知覚のあいだに生まれる断絶。その表現はきわめて個人的でありながら、匿名性をまとっています。見えているのに、本当の意味では見られていない存在たちです。
